132 days until the battery passport is required

The battery passport becomes mandatory on 18 Feb 2027. Be ready in time.

LMT batteries, industrial batteries above 2 kWh and EV batteries need a digital battery passport with a QR code from 18 Feb 2027. Collect the data from your suppliers now, approve each value with the source in front of you, and publish the passport when it is ready.

What applies when

  1. 19 Jul 2026 The Commission must have set up the EU registry for digital product passports Applies now · ESPR Art. 13(1)
  2. 12 Aug 2026 PPWR applies: declaration and technical documentation per packaging type Applies now · PPWR Art. 39 and 71; Annexes VII-VIII
  3. 27 Sep 2026 Ban on generic environmental claims towards consumers Applies now · Directive (EU) 2024/825

Why start now

The deadline is fixed, but the work comes before it. Most of what the battery passport requires has to come from your suppliers.

  1. The data sits with your suppliers

Chemistry, capacity, performance, critical raw materials and dismantling information come from the cell and battery supplier. Getting it all in and checked takes time, especially with several suppliers.

  2. The QR code goes on the battery

From 18 Feb 2027 every battery needs a QR code (Art. 13(6)). For batteries with a passport it leads to the passport. Only where that is not possible or not warranted on account of the nature and size of the battery may it go on the packaging and accompanying documents (Art. 13(7)). Labelling and production therefore have to be planned before the deadline.

  3. The same basis for the next requirements

According to the Commission, all digital product passports will use the same underlying technical system, whatever law they come from. So much of what you build for the battery passport can be reused when requirements for other products arrive.

No more "Re: Re: Re: data sheet?"

Most of what the battery passport needs sits with your suppliers. Instead of emails back and forth, each supplier gets one link and uploads straight to you.

  • One link per supplier. They do not need an account.
  • Suppliers see only the fields and documents you asked for.
  • You see at once who has answered and who is still missing.

What the battery passport must contain

The content is set out in Annex XIII of the Battery Regulation and split into access tiers. The system keeps track of which information belongs where.

  1. PublicFor example manufacturer, category, chemistry, weight, capacity, hazardous substances, critical raw materials, performance and durability, the EU declaration of conformity and waste battery information; carbon footprint once it applies (Annex XIII, point 1).
  2. Legitimate interest and the CommissionDetailed composition, spare parts, dismantling and safety, for example for repairers and recyclers (point 2).
  3. Authorities and notified bodiesResults of test reports proving compliance (point 3).
  4. The individual batteryState of health, status and use data, updated over time (point 4).
